The Gardening books on my shelf – #WorldBookDay

Published by

on

This is a post that’s been sitting in my drafts for at least a year now and today is the day to get it published.

Today is World Book Day which according to Wikipedia is…

Is an annual event the organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote readingpublishing, and copyright. World Book Day was first celebrated on 23 April 1995, and continues to be recognized on that day. A related event in the United Kingdom and Ireland is observed in March.

When it’s raining outside and I’m not able to get to the plot, I like to skim through the books on the shelf and read other blogs for inspiration. So to mark the occasion, I decided to share the books that sit on the bookshelf.

RHS Complete Gardener’s Manual: How to Dig, Sow, Plant and Grow by DK

This book is packed with essential gardening tips, from how to plant a garden from scratch to building your own vegetable garden. It mixes hands on advice with creative inspiration via easy to follow steps.

Allotment Month By Month by Alan Buckingham

I’m confident that this book sits on many a gardener’s shelf.

A new edition has just been published and I confidently say it’s one the books I turn to first when I’m at a loss with problems on the plot.

The Essential Allotment Guide by John Harrison

This little book covers everything from clearing a plot to what to grow and when.

A similar month by month approach as the book above, it’s another book I turn to when I’m at a loss of inspiration.

150 of my best ever gardening tips by Richard Jackson

This is a great little stocking filler and it’s fully of great little gardening hacks and tips to call upon when I need it.

Delia’s Complete Cookery Course – Classic Edition by Delia Smith

I know what you’re thinking… This isn’t a gardening book – and you’d be right!

I love cooking and it’s one of the reasons why I grow my own. If I’m ever at a loss with what to do with my produce, I look to good ol’ Delia for inspiration!

The Gardener’s Year by DK

This book is filled with timeless tips, is one of the more hefty valuable gardening guides on the shelf.

Everything from the “first sight of the first spring flowers to the last of the autumn harvest.”

Fifty Sheds of Grey by C. T. Grey

Not strictly a gardening book… Just something to turn to if you need a laugh or two ๐Ÿ™‚

WARNING: This book contains graphic shed-based images.

Adam the Gardener by Cyril Cowell

A gift from my better half ๐Ÿ™‚

In the 1940s, Adam the Gardener was a national treasure. Each week in the Sunday Express, he advised gardeners exactly what to plant and how.

The Market Kitchen Cookbook by Rachel Allen

This cookbook accompanies the TV show Market Kitchen on UKTV.

This book addresses how to cook wholesome meals with produce fresh from the plot.

It’s great book for seasoned cook or amateur chef looking for inspiration in the kitchen.

There we have it – the books on my shelf. What do you read or turn to for inspiration? I’d love to know in the comments below.

I have looked through I have a variety of H.G Hessayon books, my skills are gardening based so I have not read a lot of my allotment books, I have Carol kleins Grow your own veg, The big allotment challenge by Tessa Evelegh and a Farmers life for me by Jimmy Doherty which is growing to eat. All have a similar focus on specific crops as the original Hessayon books did! All good for tips and advice, but the best method is practice! If you want to grow something the packet sets guidelines, the weather and soil sets the rest!
