Ask Adam #9: Botanical Balconies

Weelfried from Croydon, UK wrote in and has a question that I’m sure a lot of people have.

How can I grow veg in a balcony. I want to get my little boy into growing some fruits/veg and anything edible.

You’re going to be focusing around container gardening and there are some really easy and gratifying things you can grow in containers.

Potatoes are an underrated container vegetable and you can end up with some great returns. The flowers are also a great splash of colour in the spring heading into the summer.

I found this video that might be useful to you as it shows you how to grow and harvest potatoes with minimal of fuss.

Tomatoes are also good – again you can grow these in a growbag, which tend to not take up some space. Also there are lots of varieties to choose from.

I remember picking tomatoes as a child and they still remind me of my childhood to this day.

If you’re growing tomato plants, then you would be wise to grow basil as well. This will help to keep the pests at bay and you’ll be getting some lovely basil to use in the kitchen as well.

But why stop at basil – you can grow a whole range of herbs on a balcony!

Salads, particularly mixed leaf are good and have a good long life through spring and summer – these can be grown in containers or even vertically.

The last thing I would recommend is strawberries. Nothing beats fresh strawberries straight off the vine. They’re sweet, juicy and a superfood (I think).

Whilst searching the web for a space saving method of growing strawberries, I found this neat laundry basket turned strawberry planter. It looks great and something I might even consider myself.

I hope the above is useful to you – can’t wait to see what you come up with 🙂
