What would you recommend for a beginner on the (long!) waiting list for a new allotment? What can they do while they wait?
So I would definitely visit your local allotment site, at least once a month and have a look around for plots that look neglected or unkept.
The idea behind this is that you can sporadically check-in with whoever manages the list to find out the status on a particular plot, and if it’s been offered to those in front of you in the queue.
In my experience, being in regular contact with whoever manages the waiting list can work wonders in getting things moving.
In the meantime, I would look to grow in spaces that are available to you – so in a porch, windowsil or even a hanging basket. Instagram is a great source of inspiration for #indoorgardening.
Lend and tend is a great place to find areas where you can garden to satisfy gardening withdrawal symptoms.
It’s also a great time to be doing some research on what kind of plants you’d like grow when you do finally get an allotment. It’s also a great excuse to visit some botanical gardens in your area to see how things are done and get some ideas.
