OK, I’ll admit it – I’m totally guilty of Instagramming my allotment and using the filters to make everything look dreamy and idealistic. I’ll also confess that I’m guilty of positioning things so eloquently so that it really does highlight how great an allotment or a garden can be – which I’m sure, probably doesn’t present the true reality of what having an allotment is all about. And my last admission is that I love all of the likes and comments that come in – it makes me feel like a little celebrity in my own mind. Well, refreshingly -Annabelle from Life at No.27 launched the #MyRealView campaign, in a bid to bring everything back to reality (as the hashtag suggests). After reading Annabelle’s post (click here), in which she details the pressure involved in making your garden look perfect – I too had to take a step back a little bit.
The allotment for me is a kind of haven that I can go to and take my time with. I dig, I plant, I watch and I imagine – it’s escapism at it’s best and it’s these qualities that keep me going back week after week, it’s an ongoing project that will never end. If it ended, I wouldn’t get much out of it – this means by definition, there are going to be ugly bits and perfect bits to the allotment and it’s the ugly bits that never see the light of day on social media.
Needless to say, Annabelle’s #MyRealView campaign has taken off and I for one have been comforted by the streams of images of untidy allotments. I always try to get as much done as possible, not just for the benefit of my crops but out of vanities sake. The fact of the matter remains, trying to keep everything look perfect at allotment is not possible unless you live there.
